A tax deduction card is an electronic document that shows how much tax your employer must deduct from your salary before it’s paid to you. Everyone who has a tax deduction card receives a new one every year.

We are renewing the tax deduction card

Even if we are renewing the tax deduction card, the information in it remains the same. The new version is not available to everyone yet, but everyone will receive a tax deduction card with a new look at some point in 2025.

Check the tax deduction card to make sure it’s correct

If the numbers in the tax deduction card are wrong, it may result in underpaid tax. Underpaid tax means that you’ve paid too little tax during the year and must pay it back next year. It’s important that you check and, if necessary, change the numbers in your tax deduction card to make sure you do not pay too much or too little tax.

This is what you must check

When you receive the tax deduction card in December, we have filled in the amount we think you’ll earn in 2025. We do this by looking at what you earned last year. We’re also adjusting the number upwards, because we expect that most people will receive a slightly higher salary than last year.

If you think you’re going to earn more or less in the next year than what we have filled in, you should change the number. You must enter your total income, which means what you expect to earn in total.

If you have several employers, you must enter the total sum of the income.

Income could be

  • salary
  • pension or disability benefit from Nav
  • sickness benefit, unemployment benefit, parental benefit, disability benefit and other benefits from Nav

If you have a loan, you can claim a deduction for the interests. This means that what you pay in interest affects what you pay in tax.

We fill in what we know you have in loans, and what we think you’ll pay in interest. We do not know if you’ve taken out a loan in the last year, so you must always check that what we’ve filled in is correct.

If the interest in the tax deduction card is higher than what you actually pay to the bank, you can end up with underpaid tax.

This is because we then believe you can claim a higher deduction than what is correct. If that happens, you must pay this back when the tax assessment is ready the following year.

You can estimate what you’ll pay in interest next year by checking what you’ve paid in interest the last month and multiplying this by 12. If you cannot find the amount in your online bank, you can contact the bank.

If the interest on bank deposits in the tax deduction card is higher than what you actually get from the bank, you can end up paying too much tax.

The tax deduction card is not automatically updated if the interests change.

If you have wealth, it will be entered in the tax deduction card. We get these numbers from last year’s tax assessment. It’s important that you check that the numbers are still the ones that apply.

It’s your responsibility

You’re responsible for checking that the correct tax is deducted. The tax deduction card is not automatically updated if your salary, interest, or other things change.

What you can also do

If you have an exemption card and you’ll earn more than NOK 100,000 in 2025, you must order a tax deduction card.

When you’ve updated the tax deduction card, your employer will retrieve it automatically. 

You’ll receive a new tax deduction card shortly, but it may take up to 5 working days if we must take a closer look at the information you’ve provided.

 If you do not have an electronic ID, we’ll send the tax deduction card  to your registered address.

If the numbers in your tax deduction card are correct, but you still want to deduct more tax, you do not need to order a new tax deduction card. Talk to the payroll office, Nav, or your pension provider, and ask them to deduct more tax.

Your employer or pension provider is obligated to deduct more tax if you request it.

Nav, pension providers, and all your employers will retrieve your tax deduction card online from the Tax Administration.

If you have several employers, a percentage-based tax deduction card may be a better option for you.

If you receive several benefits from Nav, you must contact them

If you receive several different benefits from Nav in the same period, you must contact Nav and make sure that they only apply the table-based deduction to one of the benefits. Nav will help you find out which tax deduction card you should have.

If you want to order or change the tax deduction card on paper, you must download, print, and send it by post.
