Registering joint custody

In the case of a breakup, the parents may choose to register a joint custody agreement for their children. If the child is going to move, both parents must sign the notification of move.

Parents with joint parental responsibility can register a joint custody agreement for their children in the National Population Register. Children with a joint custody agreement only have one address registered with the National Population Register. In the National Population Register, the other address will be registered as an «additional residential address».

Requirements to register an agreement of joint custody for your child

To register joint custody in the National Population Register, the parents must meet the following requirements:

  • enter into an agreement of shared permanent residence for your child
  • both parents must be registered in the National Population Register with different addresses
  • the child’s residential address must be with either the mother or father
  • the parents must have joint parental responsibility

Submission of an agreement for registration and identification requirement

When the agreement is submitted for registration, both parents’ proof of identity must be attached. When submitting online, proof of identity is only required for the parent not submitting the agreement.

The signed agreement can be submitted online the Tax Administration’s contact form or by post to:

Report a move for the child

When a joint custody agreement is registered in the National Population Register, both parents must sign the notification of a move.

If both parents agree to register a new address for the child in the National Population Register, they must report the child’s move to this address. An agreement between the parents is not considered a valid notification of a move.
